Debuted in 2009 from Tokyo Mangasha with “You in the Window.”

Her characteristic drawing is in a faintly old style and it’s girlish. But the percentage rate that the main character will be S (sadistic) is high. There’s not so much sex, but the characters’ facial expressions make you moe. Her manga “Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu/Rakuo double suicide in the flourishing Showa,” which was a huge deal in the Rakugo world when it was published in 2011, shows her strength as manga other than BL.

Koshino doesn’t seem to have a blog, but she does have a twitter!

Mangaka. Lives in Tokyo. She drew attention with her debut volume “My Neighbor” was published in 2008. She first appeared in the trade with the anthology “Pua Pua,” but she’s doing doujin at the same time. Her designs are unique, and her touch ups and panel layouts are minute. For her portrayal of genitals, you can’t miss how the pubic hair stands out and the blood vessels, and compared to the rest of the body, it’s frighteningly real. Her circulating use of planned lines combined with onomatopoeia which is frequently used, establishes her own literary style. Her standard is gag stories, and she carefully portrays the lovely feeling of men who seem to be good-for-nothing, and their anguished feelings communicate straight to the reader.

Wow. This is so accurate. Especially about the genitals.

Comments:

This story is more of a serious kind, not the light-hearted one. The characters are dealing with heavy, emotional situations, and there are practically no comical parts in this manga. That’s not to say it isn’t good, because I would definitely read this over, especially because for some reason, past events happen in the latter half of the manga, while they inference it in the first part. I don’t want to give the whole story away, so I’ll just say that if you like serious, emotional stories, I’d go for this one.

BL, Fujoshi, and all that is Vulpecula

The Many Ways of Defining Seme and Uke

1. The words themselves. 攻め(seme) attacker, 受け(uke) reciever.

2. Yumiko Sugiura’s definition from Otaku Joshi Kenkyuu: seme: plays the ‘man’ part, uke: plays the ‘woman’ part.

3. Patrick Galbraith’s definition from “Moe: Exploring Virtual Potential in Post-Millinnial Japan: “The top [seme] is the dominant personality in the character coupling. A bottom [uke] is the submissive personality, usually the protagonist of the story and often described as extremely feminine.” 

And doubtless, many many more. :) Know any others? There are so many ways to define them~!

Yaoi and Boys’ Love (BL) are stories and manga with sex and love between men as the theme, but parodies and secondary creations of already existing popular anime etc [=doujinshi/fanfic] are called “yaoi,” and original manga and novels are called “Boys’ Love.

This is how she defines yaoi and BL according to her research, but then again, some use the word interchangably.

Manga Author: Ishihara Satoru

Known for: The Overflowing Pool (Afuresou na Pool), and here’s to hoping DMG will get that out in English!

Specializes in: Violence, hard-boiled stuff

Basic info: Born November 9th. She debuted in b-boy magazine with “38 Degree Line” in 1992 as a manga author. She published her first volume, “Masatsugu-kun’s Physiological Circumstances,” in July 1993 with Ohta Publishing. Her trait is drawing sanpaku eyes (eyes where you can see white between the iris and eyelid), broad shoulders, and muscularity with thin lines, so from her first main character, and even now, they’ve been dangerous characters who are filled with an aura as though they’d start rampaging. Other than her life as a manga artist, she also works with illustrating books and designing game characters. 

Ishihara Satoru also has an official site, which can be reached by clicking on the title of this post! Of course, it’s in Japanese, but you can get a look at what other works Ishihara Satoru has done and perhaps we’ll get to work on more of her works as well!
